On 13 and 14 June SWOV and HUMANIST organized the 6th edition of the bi-annual HUMANIST conference. The conference was located at the miniature village Madurodam in The Hague, The Netherlands. This year’s theme was ‘Towards Vehicle Automation – Human Factors issues’.
A total of 32 presentations and 8 posters resulted in a broad programme, covering:
- attitudes and preferences,
- distraction and inattention,
- trust in automated vehicles,
- driver behaviour and training,
- driver state and workload,
- measuring driver behaviour,
- the influence of context,
- HMI design.

A record number of registrations was counted (97), with participants from both academia and industry, and from a variety of European countries, as well as two US residents. Due to their diversity in backgrounds, it came as no surprise that ‘networking’ was chosen as one of the highlights by the audience during the closing ceremony.
The scientific committee selected the best presentation from 8 presentations nominated by the audience. Best presentation was awarded to Francesco Walker (University of Twente) for his presentation ‘Measuring trust in automated vehicles through gaze behaviour’. Further highlights included the keynotes by Linda Boyle (University of Washington) and Sjoerd van der Zwaan (2getthere), as well as a successful social event at the beach in Scheveningen.
