Samenvatting

These guidelines provide advice regarding the use and selection of appropriate types of passively safe signposts, lighting columns, traffic signal poles, bollards and other passively safe street furniture for all rural and urban roads. Advice is also given on prioritising passive safety to those roads where it is likely to offer the greatest benefit. Although passively safe street furniture is usually more expensive than its traditional counterpart, measures such as striving for clear zones next to the carriageway and reducing unnecessary signs and roadside clutter can be low cost or even save money. Aluminium and composite lighting columns and signposts can save money as they require less maintenance. The issue of roadside trees is also discussed and protection using barriers is recommended. Tree removal with compensatory planting away from the carriageway is also suggested. The special requirements of motorcyclists are considered. A directory of companies supplying relevant products is provided. (Author/publisher)
