Samenvatting

This article focuses on the levels of quality of service of VariabIe Message Signs (VMS), and is a result of the work carried out in one of the workpackages of the European TROPIC project. The main features that have a direct impact on the levels of quality of service, like the positioning of VMS signs, the distance between sign gantries, number of information signs needed, the effects of combined information (text and pictograms) were investigated with the purpose of producing a set of guidelines for infrastructure owners. First a review of existing knowledge on this subject was carried out, followed by a series of experiments. Some of these experiments took place on a selection of European test sites, others were carried out with the use of driving simulators. Conclusions based on the findings from these experiments are presented. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
