613 road deaths in 2017

In 2017, the Netherlands counted 613 road deaths. For the first time, more road deaths were observed among cyclists than among car occupants. Comparing 613 with 629 in 2016, and 621 in 2015, this could be considered a slight decrease. That the increase of the previous years has not persisted, is positive news. However, the current slight decrease can not compensate for the previous two years with an increase: since 2010 we can not really speak of a downward trend anymore. The target of a maximum of 500 road deaths in 2020 is most probably unattainable.

More information about the number of road deaths can be found in the Fact sheet Road deaths in the Netherlands, which will be updated with new figures shortly.
