Previous work has shown that after memorizing a set of distortions, subjects are able to recognize the central tendency of that set better than other patterns within the category. Two experiments suggested that the schema pattern is less subject to loss over time than the learned instances. The results are consistent with the idea that information concerning the central tendency is abstracted during learning.
