Possible technical innovation in highway transportation which may pertain to research and development in the period to 1980 are reviewed. Emphasis is given to the intercity segments of the highway system rather than the intracity network. However, considering door- to- door intercity travel times inevitably leads to recognition that intracity segments can not be ignored.
