SWOV aims to improve road safety with knowledge from research. For years, 2020 has been the year in which the objectives of the previous road safety plan should be achieved. The number of road deaths should fall to at least 500 and the number of serious road injuries to at least 10,600.

At least 22 deaths per year from accidents involving public transport in the Netherlands

In 2010-2019, the police registered an average annual number of 22 road deaths in crashes with public transport. In number of registered casualties, public transport crashes compare favourably to private transport crashes.

Among the fatalities in crashes involving a mobility scooter in the Netherlands, men are strongly overrepresented: between 2017 and 2019, male scooter users made up 77% of the total in this group.
ETSC: Overhaul of EU rules on driver medical fitness needed
