Follow-up study into accidents involving motorcyclists: A step-by-step, in-depth study In 1995, the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research conducted a study which based its findings on existing data and in-depth studies of almost 1,000 accidents involving motorcyclists (Vis, 1995) in order to offer possibilities for creating policies or measures to make the riding of motorcycles safer. The findings have led to results that include the development of resolutions for measures regarding: the visibility, perceptibility and recognisability of motor cycles; combating unsafe behaviour, improving how emergency manoeuvres are performed; improving both the road education courses required for obtaining a driving licence as well as any supplementary driver training; and improving ways to protect motorcyclists from injury. The findings also showed, however, the need for additional exploration of the material and for comparing the data from the accident study with corresponding data involving the entire population of Dutch motorcyclists. These additional research activities are dealt with in this follow-up study. From the previous study, it appeared that three major groups of accidents could be distinguished: (1) single accidents involving motorcyclists, (2) collisions between motorcyclists and a car at intersections and (3) collisions with a car on road sections. The first step was to compare these three groups of accidents against one another according to their relevant characteristics and then to sub-classify them according to whether they occurred within or outside of urban areas. Considerable differences were found to exist between the three groups of accidents when it came to their characteristics, natures and modes of developing. Next to be examined were correlations between the characteristics of the motorcyclists (including age, motorcycle riding experience, and sex), the groups of accidents listed above, the motorcycle riding behaviour of those involved (especially as it related to speed), and other circumstances (including lighting and road surface conditions). Following this step, correlations were made between the characteristics of the motorcycles involved (including weight, specific capacity and category), involvement in the groups of accidents listed above, and speeding behaviour (exceeding the speed limit). Furthermore, the data involving the accident population was compared with the corresponding data involving the entire population of Dutch motorcyclists in order to examine which aspects or groups of motorcyclists were either overrepresented or underrepresented within the accident group. Next, relative risk figures were calculated as based on data from the accident study and from population figures obtained from Statistics Netherlands. Indoing so, three categories of motorcyclists were distinguished: young inexperienced motorcyclists, older inexperienced motorcyclists, and older more experienced motorcyclists. These categories were then sub-classified according to the category and specific capacity of the motorcycles being ridden. The three categories of motorcyclists listed above were also compared with one another according to their specific accident characteristics, the exceeding of speed limits, and the type of accident, taking into account their types of motorcycle (specific capacity and category)
