The International Cycling Safety Conference ICSC was held on 10 and 11 October 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. This was the seventh edition of the conference that started as a Dutch initiative of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, TNO, Fietsberaad (Dutch center of expertise on bicycle policy), SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research and Delft University of Technology. Over the years, the conference has evolved and expanded, now being held annually. SWOV’s Marjolein Boele is member of the steering committee.
The conference is solely dedicated to research on cycling safety. The event in Barcelona brought together more than 150 researchers, practitioners and policymakers from all over the world.
Fifty researchers shared their latest findings and challenges on topics such as cyclist behaviour, cyclist-driver interaction, road design and infrastructure, methodologies for naturalistic observation and simulation, all related to improve cycling safety. SWOV presented research on the behaviour of speed-pedelec riders.
This year’s host, Applus+IDIADA, also organised the Final Event of three European Projects InDev, Prospect and XCYCLE on Friday 12 October. These projects presented their work on protecting vulnerable road users (VRU) with live demonstrations of systems developed on improving the effectiveness of active VRU safety systems as well as active and passive detection of cyclist.
In 2019, ICSC will take place in Brisbane, Australia and will be hosted by CARRS-Q. The call for abstracts opens on 22 October 2018.
