Who we are

SWOV is the national intitute for road safety research in the Netherlands. The SWOV research uses the motto Prevent crashes, reduce injuries, save lives! as its guiding principle and places the practical use of its research results at the forefront. Periodically, SWOV publishes outlooks for the future presents balances on the developments in the field of road safety. In addition,  SWOV has knowledge on nearly all subjects in the area of road safety, always based on scientific research. SWOV uses this knowledge to advise to various stakeholders in the broad field of road safety.

SWOV's main target groups are:  

  • national politics;

  • national, regional and municipal governments;

  • advisory bodies of these governments;

  • national and international fellow-researchers;

  • educational organizations and knowledge institutes;

  • interest groups;

  • the media (parliamentary press, daily papers and professional magazines).

SWOV frequently works with international partners, either in collaboration or on commission. geregeld samen met of in opdracht van internationale partijen. This is usually done in a European context, but the international activities are also carried out in countries outside Europe. This involves the usage of existing knowledge, but at other times it requires new road safety research.
