Research questions

  1. How can the driver of a self-driving vehicle take over the driving the task in the fastest and best possible way?
  2. What is the role of higher-order skills in taking over the driving task?

Background

On certain routes (partially) automated vehicles the car will be entirely self-driving and at some point the driver will need to take over the driving task. This study investigates how drivers can do this as well and as quickly as possible. Special focus will be on higher-order skills such as situation awareness and hazard perception skills.

This study uses the SWOV-driving simulator. Participants have to travel a route, part of which the car drives autonomously. It will first be investigated how the driver can be supported in taking over the driving task as well and as quickly as possible after a period of autonomous driving. Then we will investigate whether and how much faster the driver can take over with this support.
