Study on Serious Road Traffic Injuries in the EU

In 2015 and 2016, SWOV participated in an EU research project that focused on serious road traffic injuries (MAIS 3+) among pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and car occupants in the European Union. The project is a collaboration between SWOV in the Netherlands, Loughborough University in the United Kingdom and the German institute BASt (Bundesanstalt für Strassenwesen). The study made use of data files supplied by the police, hospitals and trauma centers, and of in-depth studies. The main research questions in the project were:

  • What are the most important crash scenarios and characteristic?
  • What are the main injury factors?

The study resulted in recommendations to reduce the number of serius road injuries in Europe.
