In-depth study into crashes with light mopeds on urban bike paths

In recent years it seems to have become increasingly busy on bike paths. In addition, the traffic combination on these bike paths has altered significantly; wider and faster vehicles such as like carrier tricycles, light moped scooters and pedelecs now also use the bike path. In some cities, the busy traffic on the bike path has already led to the proposal to move a share of the two-wheelers, namely the light moped, to the roadway. That would benefit the safety and flow on the bike paths. However, if other factors also play a role in the development of moped crashes on bike paths, other solutions may be safer for both cyclist and light moped rider.

The purpose of this research is to contribute to understanding the factors and conditions that influence the occurrence and outcome of light moped crashes. This knowledge is necessary for sound decision-making on whether or not to move the moped from the bike path to the roadway, including any additional or alternative measures that need to be taken.

This study is carried out by the SWOV-team for in-depth research.
