The first step towards a National Exploration of traffic safety in the Netherlands for the years 1990-2010 is presented. The policy of the central and local government in relation to the lack of traffic safety is dealt with, against the background of the increase of the mobility in the period after the second World War. Dealing with the exploration of the future of traffic safety, attention is paid to: (1) the control of mobility; (2) measures to be aimed at the infrastructure; (3) influencing the behaviour of road users; (4) measures to increase the safety of vehicles; and (5) assistance and medical care.
