Prof. Dr Nicole van Nes is research manager of the department ‘Human Factors in Vehicle Automation’; she is leading the research on safety in the transition to the autonomous vehicle. This research investigates how road users deal with the new technology that vehicles are increasingly being equipped with. Nicole is coordinator of the European project MEDIATOR, which focuses on optimal collaboration between a human driver and vehicle automation. Nicole also has ample experience in Naturalistic Driving research. She was coordinator of the large-scale European Naturalistic Driving study UDRIVE and is actively involved in the ongoing research on the UDRIVE data.

Nicole holds a professorship of one day a week in 'Human Centered Design for Smart Mobility' at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology. In 2016, Nicole was for 3 months a guest researcher at Australian Road Research Board (ARRB, Sydney, Australia) and in 2008 and 2009 at Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) in Melbourne, Australia.

Nicole graduated at Industrial Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology and obtained her PhD on Sustainable Product Design in Social Sciences at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
