SWOV explains Sustainable Safety in online presentations

SWOV experts Aarts and Schermers gave online presentations this week at the Summer School Mechelen in Belgium and the South African Road Federation (SARF) in South Africa. Topic of discussion: 'Sustainable Road Safety', also known internationally as the 'Safe System' approach. The common theme in the presentations was the Dutch experience with 'Sustainable Road Safety'.

There seems to be an increasing international interest in this 'Safe System' approach. The Netherlands is one of the forerunners in this field. SWOV therefore also takes part in a working group of the OECD and the World Bank to disseminate the 'Safe System' approach. The aim of this collaboration is to start up pilot projects in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC) in particular.

Sustainable safety

In 2018, SWOV updated the Sustainable Safety vision. The Sustainable Safety approach has prevented many casualties in the Netherlands and is internationally praised together with the Swedish 'Vision Zero' as the prime example of the 'safe system' approach.
