LEVITATE: What do policymakers want to know about the impact of Connected & Automated Transport Systems?

The European LEVITATE project develops tools to help policy makers prepare for the arrival of Connected & Automated Transport Systems (CATS). The most important output of LEVITATE is an online 'Policy Support Tool' (PST) that provides local authorities with insight into the influence of automated vehicles. This concerns road safety, the environment, the economy and society in the short, medium and long term.

The PST will also contain a tool that advises local authorities on the measures to be taken to achieve desired policy goals against a background of increasing vehicle automation. LEVITATE is a 3-year project that started in December 2018 and is led by Loughborough University. SWOV is one of the twelve partners in the project.

To develop tools that meet the needs of future users, 45 experts from Europe and Australia came to Gothenburg to discuss their visions, expectations, use cases and conflicts for a future with CATS. Workshop participants were local, regional and national authorities, agencies, service providers, OEMs, researchers and networks representing user groups such as cities, pedestrians, car or road research.
