678 road deaths in 2018

In 2018, the Netherlands counted 678 road deaths: 65 more than in 2017, according to figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). This considerable increase is in line with the unfavorable development of the number of road deaths the past years. The number of road deaths in 2018 is the highest number since 2010.

Dutch Parliament has expressed the ambition to aim for zero road deaths in 2050. The ambition has also been incorporated in the recently launched "Road Safety Strategic Plan 2030". To realise this ambition, it is clear that substantial measures are needed. According to recent calculations this would require investments amounting to around 15 billion euros.

Towards the end of 2019 SWOV will publish her annual Road Safety Monitor (in Dutch only), including an analysis of road safety statistics.
