MEDIATOR: European research on autonomous vehicles

The European DG Research and Innovation (RTD) has accepted the MEDIATOR proposal presented by SWOV. MEDIATOR is a comprehensive four-year study that focuses on optimal coordination between a human driver and (partly) autonomous vehicle systems.

MEDIATOR aims to develop an instrument that checks in real-time whether the control of the vehicle can be better with the driver or with one of the autonomous systems. The system also ensures that the transfer of the control takes place on time and safely. To this end, the instrument continuously monitors the fitness and skill of the driver as well as the requirements from the traffic situation and contrasts this with the possibilities and limitations of the autonomous systems in the car.

SWOV will coordinate the project and collaborate with a large number of European and international partners from the research world and the automotive industry. We hope to be able to start the research in the course of the spring.
