The accident risk in road traffic at night is higher than during the day. In the dark, lighting and the application of retroreflective materials may support the visual perception of traffic participants. The paper describes the different materials that are available at present. Special attention is given to new developments in optical and mechanical design of retroreflectors. The preference of different types of retroreflecting materials for different areas of application is discussed.
