Het rapport betreft een beknopte literatuurstudie, uitgevoerd in verband met de vraag welke recente inzichten er bestaan omtrent de noodzaak tot concrete aanpassingen van de infrastructuur aan de eigenschappen van oudere verkeersdeelnemers en welke mogelijkheden daartoe ontwikkeld zijn. Het rapport is opgesteld in het kader van een breder onderzoeksproject: ‘Behoefte aan aparte maatregelen voor ouderen'. Dit project heeft als algemeen uitgangspunt de vraagstelling of het zogenoemde concept ‘duurzaam-veilig' in zijn huidige uitwerking voor wat betreft de verkeersinfrastructuur, ook voor ouderen daadwerkelijk zal leiden tot een aanmerkelijke verbetering van hun veiligheid in het verkeer. Zo niet, dan wordt aangegeven hoe dit alsnog te verwezenlijken is. De onlangs verschenen internationale literatuur blijkt zich wat oudere voetgangers betreft, vooral te richten op ‘loop-eigenschappen', meestal in relatie tot het ontwerp van kruispunten en verkeersregelingen. Ook de begrijpelijkheid van verkeersregels en -tekens krijgt enige aandacht. Bij oudere automobilisten zijn vooral de zichtafstanden die nodig zijn om tijdig te kunnen stoppen, onderwerp van studie, evenals de waarnemingsvereisten van verkeerstekens en markeringen. Diverse aspecten omtrent oudere fietsers, zoals het feitelijk gebruik van voorzieningen, in vergelijking met beoogd gebruik en de menging van fiets- en bromfietsverkeer, worden voornamelijk besproken aan de hand van Nederlandse literatuur. In een nabeschouwing wordt geconcludeerd dat noodzakelijke basiskennis ter beschikking is gekomen over menselijk gedrag dat onderhevig is aan veroudering. Die kennis zal nu verder in richtlijnen en dergelijke vertaald moeten worden. Wat het inpassen van aan leeftijd gebonden menselijk gedrag in de infrastructuur aangaat, is evenwel nog weinig kennis voorhanden
A safe traffic infrastructure for elderly road users The report concerns a brief literature study, performed in order to determine what recent insights exist concerning the need for concrete adaptations to the infrastructure in response to the characteristics of elderly road users, and what possibilities have been developed in that regard. The report is published within the context of a broader research project: ‘The need for specific measures for the elderly'. The general principle of this project is to determine whether the so-called concept of ‘sustainable-safe' in its current implementation with regard to the traffic infrastructure will also lead to a considerable improvement in the safety of the elderly in traffic. If this is not the case, then it is indicated how this can still be effected. Recently published international literature relating to the elderly pedestrian seems to focus on ‘walking characteristics', generally in relation to intersections and traffic regulations. In addition, the clarity of traffic rules and road signs is given some attention. The viewing distance needed to stop in time and the perception requirements of road signs and markings are a specific subject of study where the older motorist is concerned. Various aspects relating to elderly cyclists, such as the actual use of available facilities in comparison to their intended use and the mixing of cycle and moped traffic, is discussed primarily on the basis of the relevant Dutch literature. A final synopsis concludes that essential basic knowledge concerning the ageing process as a factor of human behaviour has become available. This knowledge will now need to be incorporated into new guidelines and the like. However, little knowledge is as yet available with respect to fitting age-related human behaviour into the infrastructure.
