Peter van der Knaap: 'I am hopeful that ISA will eventually be a success'

On 28 January 2016, SWOV hosted a meeting of crash costs experts from the two EU projects SafetyCube and InDeV. Both projects are carried out within the European Horizon 2020 Programme.

The Netherlands wishes to facilitate the testing of self-driving vehicles on public roads to stimulate innovations in this field. The Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment (IenM) asked SWOV's advice on how to carry out field trials with these vehicles in the safest possible way.

Road safety in the Netherlands has ceased to improve. The number of road deaths does no longer decline and the number of serious road injuries increases. If no major adjustments in policy and implementation are made at all levels, the Dutch road safety target for 2020, a maximum of 500 road deaths and 10.500 serious road injuries, will not be met.

There is still much to improve in road safety in the Netherlands. The number of serious traffic injuries is increasing and the cities in particular threatens to get congested. The self-driving car could also cause new safety problems. Marjan Hagenzieker wants to address these issues by paying attention to, above all, the human behaviour in road safety.

SWOV studies often require large amounts of data on the conditions during traffic participation, e.g. movements of the vehicle, the condition of the road user and the traffic conditions he or she is in. Many of the measuring devices that are used share the same basis. SWOV therefore developed a tool that can be connected to different types of vehicle in different studies.

New Zealand wants to identify cost-effective ways of promoting safe city cycling and has therefore entered into a collaboration with SWOV with special focus on the future of the bicycle in urban transport systems in New Zealand.

Progress on reducing road deaths in the EU slowed to just -0.6% last year, the worst annual reduction since the first common EU target was set in 2001, according to new analysis published today by the European Transport Safety Council. EU member states now need to cut deaths by almost 8% each year until 2020 to meet the target set in 2010 to halve deaths within a decade.
