EU Member States that use a single source of data should cross-check these data with other sources. Research in countries that do use more than one source, reveals that single sources tend to be incomplete. This is one of the recommendations in the latest report of the European Transport Safety Council.

On 17 May the European Commission has set a new target for road deaths and serious road injuries to be cut in half by 2030. In order to achieve this target, a package of road safety measures will be issued for vehicle safety standards, infrastructure safety management and a strategy for automated driving. Each year, around 25,000 people lose their lives on EU roads.

Since 2010, we can not really speak of a downward trend anymore. The target of a maximum of 500 road deaths in 2020 is most probably unattainable.
A safe design of roadsides along motorways can help to prevent serious injury in – especially single vehicle – road crashes. Improving the safety of roadsides is also an important measure to reduce the number of people killed on national roads, according to recent SWOV research (Stipdonk et al., 2016).
