Linking crashes to the NRD

In the past all crashes were linked manually to the NRD. The way in which crashes were linked to the NRD changed when the Registered Road Crash Database (RRCD) was introduced. In principle, crashes are automatically linked to the NRD by place of residence and street names. For each crash the accuracy of this linking is given.

Exact: the crash can be linked exactly to a road segment or a junction. It sometimes happens that the information on the report form is insufficient to make an exact link. In the case of fatal and in-patient crashes enquiries are made at the authority who booked the crash. These crashes are then exactly linked.

In the case of other crashes no enquiries are made. They can be linked in the following ways:

Street/intersection: the information of the report form is inadequate to determine the exact ocation, but using the street names an approximation can be made.

Municipality: if linking at the street level doesn't succeed, the crash is allocated to a randomly picked road segment/junction within the town In practice that is the one with the lowest x-y coordinates within the town. Consequently, all these crashes are linked to the same road segment.

A crash on an intersection is always located at a junction.

In the past, road segment crashes used to be located on the road segment as exactly as possible. This practice has been abandoned with the introduction of the road crash registration 'BRON'. The Transport Research Centre recommends using the middle of the road segment for presentation purposes. The exceptions to this rule are the hectometred roads because road segment crashes are situated on the segment based on the hectometre post.
