Data collection

The road crash database is maintained by the Ministry of Transport's AVV Transport Research Centre and is based on the report forms filled in by the police and sent to AVV.

With the introduction of BRON in 2004, AVV has changed its way of working. The database's coding follows the information on the police form. If this information is insufficient or ambiguous, no further action is undertaken to complete it. Exceptions to this rule are severe crashes resulting in death or in-patient hospitalization. Part of the data processing sequence is linking crashes to the National Road Database (NRD). In principle this happens automatically, based on street and place names. See National Road Database for more information.
