Data collection
The road crash database is maintained by the Ministry of Transport's AVV Transport Research Centre and is based on the report forms filled in by the police and sent to AVV.
With the introduction of BRON in 2004, AVV has changed its way of working. The database's coding follows the information on the police form. If this information is insufficient or ambiguous, no further action is undertaken to complete it. Exceptions to this rule are severe crashes resulting in death or in-patient hospitalization. In those cases AVV contacts the police for:
- additions to missing data or correcting inconsistent data;
- location determination, exact placement on the National Road Database;
- removing doubles if, after screening, a crash is suspected to have already been reported to AVV.
Part of the data processing sequence is linking crashes to the National Road Database (NRD). In principle this happens automatically, based on street and place names. See National Road Database for more information.
