Vehicle, safety devices, and ITS

Technical measures can make an important contribution to the improvement of road safety. Examples are measures which are either applied outside or inside the vehicle, and improve vehicle lighting, optimize a crashworthy design, or prevent mechanical defects by regular vehicle inspection.

Specific technical measures can reduce road user vulnerability. The correct use of seatbelts and child safety devices reduces the risk of a fatal crash by more than 30%, and wearing a bicycle-, moped-, or motorcycle helmet considerably reduces the risk of fatal head injury.

The use of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is a measure for the more distant future. ITS are modern information and communication devices that nowadays are mainly aimed at driving comfort, but are expected to make an important road safety contribution in the future. These systems can be an important aid to aging motorists who find their driving task more difficult because of physical and functional limitations.
