How dangerous is wrong-way driving?
Because valid data is lacking, it is difficult to determine how frequently wrong-way driving actually occurs. In the period 1991-1997 the yearly average was five deaths as a result of wrong-way driving crashes. This is about 3.7% of all yearly road deaths on motorways.
The numbers of such crashes and fatalities decreased after 1997, probably partly due to improved traffic signs. In the period 1998-2003 there was an average of two deaths per year, which amounts to 1.9% of all motorway deaths.
