Emotions in traffic

Emotions are a regular occurrence in traffic. They can come about in various ways, for example, as a result of specific events in traffic, but also because of something that happened before the journey started. Four basic emotions are usually distinguished: anger, happiness, fear, and sorrow. Happiness is the most frequent emotion in traffic, followed by anger. Emotions can have negative road safety effects. This is especially true of anger. Anger is linked to aggression and risky behaviour. For example, angry motorists break speeds limit more often than those who are not angry. Little research of the consequences of other emotions has yet been carried out. Further research into the occurrence of traffic emotions and their effects on driving behaviour can serve as handles for new road safety measures.
