Ultimately, we have only one kind of criterion for safety: the number and severity of road traffic accidents. With such a criterion, however, we are limited to taking measures after the fact. Although predictive or evaluative criteria are in the developmental stages, they do not yet exist. For individual telematics, the following criteria are undergoing development:
The traffic behaviour of the individual road user
Some criteria related to mental stimulation (i.e., both too much and too little stimulation) are known while some are still being developed.
Some criteria related to interaction with pieces of equipment (the human-machine interface) are known while some are still being developed.
Criteria related to changes in behaviour in the longer term are being developed.
The interaction of behaviour exhibited by various individual road users
Criteria are being researched.
Standards for applications
Codes of Practice for design and function now exist.
Standardization for multiple applications and suppliers is not yet a reality.
In addition to safety, other standards such as capacity, traffic flow, homogeneity, desired speed, etc., apply to collective systems.
