Crashes

Are there many crashes at road works?

In the Netherlands, an average of approximately 233 serious crashes with a total of 25 deaths and 245 in-patients occurs at road works each year. This is about 2% of all Dutch road crash casualties.

Most of the road works casualties are not among the road workers, but among the ordinary road users. Particularly lorries are relatively often involved in road works crashes. Weather conditions and darkness have no direct influence on the number of crashes. Relatively more serious crashes occur in June, September, October, and November because these are the months in which road works are carried out more frequently. It is not clear whether the duration of the road works affects the crash rate.
