Speed management is crucial for improving road safety. Therefore, a combination of measures should be employed to ensure that drivers maintain a safe speed.
First, road authorities set the speed limit and, with road signs and road markings, ensure that road users know is the limit. Road design, (e.g. roundabouts) and infrastructure (e.g. physical speed limiters) support the local speed limit. Furthermore, the road layout is crucial for credibility, acceptance, and obedience.
Dynamic speed limits can also contribute to better compliance. Information (campaigns) and education are essential instruments in knowledge dissemination and contribute to an increased awareness of the importance of speed for road safety. Police enforcement will always be necessary for notorious speed offenders.
