Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA)

In the future, intelligent in-vehicle systems will contribute to more road users obeying the speed limit. One of the promising technologies is Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) that warns the driver when exceeding the speed limit.

ISA makes use of satellite navigation in combination with a digital map containing the speed limits. There are various variants of the system. The informing or warning variant is a relatively small extension of the route navigation systems that many vehicles already have, and can thus become widely spread in Europe within several years.

The variants that intervene in the driving task, limit the driver's freedom to use the accelerator when and how he wants to. We expect that ISA will reduce the risk of a crash, especially in combination with dynamic speed limits.

The ultimate success of ISA depends on the social and political support and the extent to which the driver retains his freedom of choice in exceeding the speed limit.

Other electronic systems that assist drivers in their driving task and more indirectly influence their driving speed are Advanced Cruise Control (ACC) and other types of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
