After their introduction, the number of mopeds rapidly increased to 2 million in 1970. The period 1970-1980 showed a sharp decline in the number of mopeds: from 2 million to half a million. A major reason for this decline is the compulsory helmet use which was introduced in 1975. From 1994 onward, the numbers of mopeds and light-mopeds are registered separately. The registration shows that the number of mopeds has decreased since that time, whereas the number of light-mopeds has been increasing. In 1994, mopeds accounted for about 75% and light-mopeds for 25% of the total number of (light-)mopeds. In 2006, the approximate shares were 60% for mopeds and 40% for light-mopeds.
