The Netherlands in an international context
When compared with other countries, the Netherlands does well in road safety. At present, the Netherlands is one of the top three nations worldwide. In the last 15 years, the development of the number of road deaths in the Netherlands has been more or less the same as the average development in the 15 'old' Member States of the European Union (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom). The 10 'new' Member States (Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia) lag somewhat behind the old 15.
