Death rate: the number of road deaths per billion vehicle kilometres

The number of road deaths per billion vehicle kilometres is another road safety indicator. Because they have no data about traffic kilometres travelled, many countries use the total number of vehicles as a substitute. That is why the graph is incomplete and does not always refer to the same period.

Based on the available data, Sweden and Great Britain have the smallest number of deaths per motor vehicle kilometre within the EU, followed by the Netherlands and Finland. Netherland is also slightly safer than for instance Australia, Canada, the United States, and Japan.
