Road casualties in the Netherlands: general developments
In 2007, in the Netherlands, 791 people were killed in a road crash. In 2006 the number of road deaths was 811 and in 2005 there were 817 fatalities in Dutch road traffic.
Looking at the developments over a longer time period, we see a large increase from 1000 road deaths in 1950 to a peak of 3250 in 1972. Since 1973, this number has been decreasing steadily. At the beginning of the 21st century, this decrease seemed to have stabilized at about 1080 road deaths a year, but in 2004 and 2005 the number suddenly dropped to 881 and 817 road deaths. The data of 2006 and 2007, 811 and 791 road deaths respectively, indicate a smaller decrease, but a development in the right direction.
