International Cooperation

Science knows no borders: much of the knowledge that is used in the Netherlands is found in research done in other countries. Every SWOV study, for example, begins with an international scan of available knowledge. Road safety research is increasingly carried out in international cooperation and exchange of knowledge in international networks is becoming more and more important. SWOV considers international cooperation to be both a welcome and a necessary enrichment of knowledge and expertise. It makes it possible to participate in research that cannot be done on a Dutch scale. In addition, international participation in improves the research quality because it offers a platform to test the research with international experts.

The menu at the left lists some network organisations and current or recently concluded projects in which SWOV is or was represented. For SWOV the European Union Framework Programmes are an important initiator of cooperation. As a consequence SWOV has many contacts with European research institutes.

Furthermore, SWOV maintains important bilateral contacts with authoritative research organisations outside Europe. The so-called Memoranda of Understanding that have been entered into with these institutes result, for example, in an exchange of researchers. Some of the active contacts outside Europe are those with MONASH University Accident Research Centre (MUARC, www.monash.edu.au/muarc) in Australia and the University of North-Carolina in the US (www.hsrc.unc.edu).

In addition to this type of structural relations, SWOV participates in many international study groups, committees en conferences. SWOV is also invited very frequently by national governments and scientific forums to present information about a specific subject or to participate in discussions. The Sustainable Safety vision in particular is a topic that arouses wide interest outside the Netherlands.
