SafetyNet

European Road Safety Observatory ERSO

Objective of the project
SafetyNet was a large international cooperation which made the framework for the European road safety observatory ERSO. ERSO joins the knowledge and data that are required to monitor and improve road safety in Europe. SafetyNet consisted of 7 workpackages dealing with crash data, exposition data, data from in-depth studies, indicators for road safety, research methods, an information system, and the analysis of collected data.

SWOV contribution
SWOV was the leader of workpackage 3: Safety Performance Indicators. These are indicators concerned with the safety level of the vehicle fleet, the use of alcohol by road users, the quality of the road network, seatbelt wearing etc.; the underlying factors that determine the road safety in a country (and in the EU). SWOV was also the leader of workpackage 6 (European Road Safety Information System), in which the ERSO website was constructed. Among other things, this required collecting available knowledge which was summarized in web texts by an international panel of experts.
