PROLOGUE

PROmoting real Life Observations for Gaining Understanding of road user behaviour in Europe

Objective of the project

The main objective of PROLOGUE is to demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of a large-scale European naturalistic driving study. In naturalistic driving studies, drivers or riders as well as the environment are observed unobtrusively by means of small cameras and sensors, which are mainly placed inside the car, occasionally along the roadside. Observations take place in a natural setting and for a longer period of time. This approach makes it possible to analyse the interrelationship between road user, vehicle, road and other traffic in normal situations, in conflict situations and in actual collisions. Results will lead to a better understanding of road safety and help to realise an intrinsically safe road transport system, making use of in-car technology, self-explaining roads, driver training, etc.

The feasibility and usefulness will be studied by means five pilot studies which cover various relevant road safety issues.

SWOV contribution

SWOV is the coordinator of this study and is involved in almost all workpackages. SWOV's most important work concerns the identification of potential user groups of the Naturalistic Driving results and their specific interests and questions; a pilot study of the driving behaviour of novice drivers and cross cultural comparisons; and summarizing the main findings and integrating the results into recommendations for a future large scale study.

Duration

From August 2009 until August 2011
