Evaluations to Realise a common Approach to Self-explaining European Roads
Objective of the project
Crashes occur unexpectedly by definition. It is therefore extremely important that the road features evoke the correct expectations about the speed limit, other road users, right of way, et cetera. Moreover, a good road design will make the road users judge the speed limit to be suitable and research has shown that this leads to fewer offences and less variation in speeds driven. In ERASER empirical studies with photographs and camera observations in several European countries investigate which features on rural roads evoke the correct expectations and lend credibility. This information is then used to draw up a checklist which road authorities – who commissioned the study – can use to check to what extent their roads are predictable and their speed limits credible, and which measures could be used for improvement.
SWOV contribution
In the Netherlands the study has already been carried out and a first checklist has been developed and tested for usefulness. ERASER offers the possibility to improve the checklist, both its validity and reliability as well as its practical applicability. SWOV is consortium leader.
