The relationship between road safety and congestion on motorways
A literature review of potential effects. P. Marchesini & W. Weijermars. R-2010-12
In the past few decades Dutch mobility has increased considerably, and it will continue to do so in the following years. This will lead to congestion on road stretches with insufficient capacity. This literature review investigates the relationship between congestion and safety at road sections of the main road network (mainly motorways) and specifically looks at unstable and congested traffic conditions.

Investigating driver distraction : the effects of video and static advertising : a driving simulator study. M. Chattington et al. Crowthorne, Berkshire, Transport Research Laboratory TRL, 2010, 82 p., 12 ref.; Published Project Report ; PPR 409 - ISSN 0968-4093 / ISBN 978-1-84608-867-4
Roadside advertising is a common sight on urban roads. Previous research suggests the presence of advertising increases mental workload and changes the profile of eye fixations, drawing attention away from the driving task. This study was conducted using a driving simulator and integrated eye-tracking system to compare driving behaviour across a number of experimental advertising conditions.

Road safety in Europe : towards safer vehicles, towards safer behaviours, towards safer roads. Brussels, European Union, Directorate-General for Energy and Transport (TREN), 2009, DVD; Catalogue number KO-32-09-203-6L-Z - ISBN 978-92-79-14432-5. Each year 40.000 people die on European roads due to traffic accidents. Even though progress has been made these last few years to reduce the number of casualties, it is still too much, far too much. Road safety measures should be taken at every level, by everyone involved, but also by each one of us because road safety is everybody's business. The three video clips on this DVD show the recent progress and the trends for the coming years in the three areas that form the basis of road safety : vehicle safety, the behaviour of road users and the safety of the infrastructure.

Country guidelines for the conduct of road safety management capacity reviews and the specification of lead agency reforms, investment strategies and safe system projects. T. Bliss & J. Breen. Washington, D.C., The World Bank, 2009, 329 p.

Following the publication of the World Health Organisation's 'World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention' in 2004, this document presents guidelines to help low- and middle-income countries develop measures to reduce the economic and social costs associated with road accidents.
