Four-year programme 2007-2010

Ten programmes are planned for the 2007-2010 period :

Roads and traffic

The Roads and Traffic programme focuses on road layout, function, and use of roads and their crash rates.

Which layout leads to which behaviour and to which safety level? And how can we ensure that the layout is of an optimal quality also in practice?

With this knowledge, road designers, road authorities, and town and country planners can make well-considered choices for new roads or changes in existing roads and road networks.

Human Behaviour

The Human Behaviour programme aims at increasing our knowledge and understanding of various aspects of human behaviour in traffic and the underlying factors.

This provides a basis for taking measures to make road traffic safer.

Assessments and Outlooks

The Assessment and Outlooks programme is aimed at explaining why road safety has developed the way it has. If this is done successfully, we can make well-founded predictions about future developments.

Road Safety Analyses

Valid and detailed data is necessary to make sound analyses of road safety developments, for example as a basis for making assessments and outlooks. Only then can we find explanations for increases and decreases in the numbers of traffic casualties.

In the Road Safety Analyses programme we focus on obtaining and processing relevant data in order to paint a clear picture of road safety developments.

International Activities

SWOV plays a large part in various EU projects. We will continue to do so, and, where necessary, extend our activities.

SWOV will also investigate how vehicle and ITS measures may contribute to reaching the road safety targets as formulated in the Mobility Policy Document.

These measures are to a large extent influenced by international regulations and developments.

Research on Regional Issues

To a large extent, road safety policy is a regional responsibility. Regions are keen to make a contribution to a further decrease in the number of traffic casualties. The Research on Regional Issues programme focuses on research that is intended to help them achieve this.

Examples of projects in which SWOV cooperates with regional partners are: Regional Traffic Education, Investing in infrastructure, and Network analyses.

Advisory Research

Part of the Advisory Research programme consists of the regular advisory work and answering requests for advice, and another part is involved with research to broaden and deepen our understanding.

Regular advisory work is the direct communication of SWOV knowledge in, for example, working groups and expert panels. On a regular basis SWOV also gives advice to national, provincial and municipal governments, organizations, and institutes. Such paid advisory work must comply with the requirements as expressed in the Ministry of Transport's procedure agreements.

Broadening and deepening involves making outlooks of (policy) areas that can have an influence on road safety, now or in the future. In the 2003-2006 programme outlooks were made of, for example, social and cultural factors, and of public health.

PhD Research

Seven PhD candidates are expected to complete their PhD research in the 2007-2010 period, and three new PhD studies will commence.

SWOV supports the PhD candidates and, if necessary, makes additional reports. Since 2006, the dissertations are published in the SWOV dissertation series.

Fact Sheets and Knowledge Base

To help a visitor find his way in the large collection of information and knowledge, the Knowledge Base has been set up in layers. Each subject is introduced by a short text.

The visitor who wants more detailed information can is referred to a Fact sheet which gives more background information.

These fact sheets, in turn, contain references to relevant studies that go deeper into a subject.

This way we expect to meet the various needs of knowledge.

Knowledge Dissemination

With the Knowledge Dissemination programme SWOV wants to meet the information requirements of all road safety professionals as well as possible.

The purpose is for our knowledge to be used in every discussion, orientation, and decision making concerning a road safety subject. In this way we wish to make a contribution to the quality of decision making about road safety policy and its implementation.

Contact: Han Tonnon

The knowledge dissemination activities are carried out by the Information and Communication Department.

All SWOV activities are supported by the Operational Management Department and the Secretariat.
